Bovine gammaherpesvirus 6 tropism in its natural host

Introduction: Bovine gammaherpesvirus 6 (BoHV-6) is endemic in cattle in Europe with a high prevalence and is considered a commensal that is not associated with any disease processes. The present study aimed to identify the target cells of BoHV-6, investigating tissues tested positive for the virus by quantitative PCR.

Characterization and co-localization of thyroid stimulating hormone and melatonin receptors in the pars tuberalis of mares during the breeding and non-breeding seasons

Control of seasonal reproduction in horses has yet to be fully elucidated; however, duration of melatonin secretion is a seasonal regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The hypophyseal pars tuberalis (PT) appears to play a key role in the transduction of melatonin signal through melatonin responsive, PT-specific cells that produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The objectives of these experiments were to characterize and colocalize TSH-producing cells and melatonin receptors (MT1r) in the PT during breeding and non-breeding seasons.

Post-breeding intrauterine infusion of dehydrated amnion product produces similar pregnancy rates as antibiotics

Results of two large studies by Pascoe and then Pycock first demonstrated the value of postbreeding treatments in mares. When combined, these authors analyzed pregnancy data from over 2200 mares. In their studies, those treated with antibiotics (ABX) and plasma or oxytocin had a higher conception rate than any other group. However, a Cochrane-style review by Barter and Barrelet (Veterinary Evidence 2018;3(1):1-11. of these and numerous smaller studies didn't convincingly confirm a treatment benefit of any specific therapy.

Validation of an RNAscope assay for the detection of avian influenza A virus

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is an acute viral disease associated with high mortality and great economic losses. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a common diagnostic and research tool for the demonstration of avian influenza A virus (AIAV) antigens within affected tissues, supporting etiologic diagnosis and assessing viral distribution in both naturally and experimentally infected birds. RNAscope in situ hybridization (ISH) has been used successfully for the identification of a variety of viral nucleic acids within histologic samples.

The ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) is the largest neurogenic region of the postnatal forebrain, containing neural stem cells (NSCs) that emerge from both the embryonic pallium and subpallium. Lung endothelial cells regulate pulmonary fibrosis through FOXF1/R-Ras signaling

Pulmonary fibrosis results from dysregulated lung repair and involves multiple cell types. The role of endothelial cells (EC) in lung fibrosis is poorly understood. Using single cell RNA-sequencing we identified endothelial transcription factors involved in lung fibrogenesis, including FOXF1, SMAD6, ETV6 and LEF1. Focusing on FOXF1, we found that FOXF1 is decreased in EC within human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and mouse bleomycin-injured lungs. Endothelial-specific Foxf1 inhibition in mice increased collagen depositions, promoted lung inflammation, and impaired R-Ras signaling.

Single-cell analysis reveals inflammatory interactions driving macular degeneration

Due to commonalities in pathophysiology, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) represents a uniquely accessible model to investigate therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, leading us to examine whether pathways of disease progression are shared across neurodegenerative conditions. Here we use single-nucleus RNA sequencing to profile lesions from 11 postmortem human retinas with age-related macular degeneration and 6 control retinas with no history of retinal disease.
