Comprehensive epithelial biomarker analysis of malignant mesothelioma: EpCAM positivity is a potential diagnostic pitfall

Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is frequently used to distinguish carcinoma from background mesothelial cells during cytologic examination of body cavity fluids. Previously, the authors identified one malignant mesothelioma case with strong and diffuse membranous EpCAM staining, making it indistinguishable from carcinoma.In this study, the authors evaluated all available effusion specimens from patients with malignant mesothelioma, including the above-mentioned index case, obtained at Stanford Health Care, from 2011 to 2021 (N = 17) as well as control cases (N = 5).

Anti-HERV-K Drugs and Vaccines, Possible Therapies against Tumors

The footprint of human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), specifically HERV-K, has been found in malignancies, such as melanoma, teratocarcinoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, lymphoma, and ovary and prostate cancers. HERV-K is characterized as the most biologically active HERV due to possession of open reading frames (ORF) for all Gag, Pol, and Env genes, which enables it to be more infective and obstructive towards specific cell lines and other exogenous viruses, respectively.

Targeting translation: A review of preclinical animal models in the development of treatments for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy

The expanding use of chemotherapy in curative cancer treatment has simultaneously resulted in a substantial and growing cohort of cancer survivors with prolonged disability from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). CIPN is associated with several commonly prescribed chemotherapeutics, including taxanes, platinum-based drugs, vinca alkaloids, bortezomib and thalidomide.

Therapeutic efficacy of a VSV-GP-based human papilloma virus vaccine in a murine cancer model

Human papilloma virus (HPV) infections are associated with almost all cervical cancers and to a lower extend also with anogenital or oropharyngeal cancers. HPV proteins expressed in HPV-associated tumors are attractive antigens for cancer vaccination strategies as self-tolerance, which is associated with most endogenous tumor-associated antigens, does not need to be overcome. In this study, we generated a live attenuated cancer vaccine based on the chimeric vesicular stomatitis virus VSV-GP, which has previously proven to be a potent vaccine vector and oncolytic virus.

The prometastatic relevance of tumor-infiltrating B lymphocytes in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) continues to show no improvement in survival rates. One aspect of PDAC is elevated ATP levels, pointing to the purinergic axis as a potential attractive therapeutic target. Mediated in part by highly druggable extracellular proteins, this axis plays essential roles in fibrosis, inflammation response, and immune function. Analyzing the main members of the PDAC extracellular purinome using publicly available databases discerned which members may impact patient survival.

Involvement of the kynurenine pathway in breast cancer: updates on clinical research and trials

Breast cancer (BrCa) is the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality in women worldwide. While BrCa treatment has been shown to be highly successful if detected at an early stage, there are few effective strategies to treat metastatic tumours. Hence, metastasis remains the main cause in most of BrCa deaths, highlighting the need for new approaches in this group of patients. Immunotherapy has been gaining attention as a new treatment for BrCa metastasis and the kynurenine pathway (KP) has been suggested as one of the potential targets.

Autocrine activation of MAPK signaling mediates intrinsic tolerance to androgen deprivation in LY6D prostate cancer cells

The emergence of castration-resistant prostate cancer remains an area of unmet clinical need. We recently identified a subpopulation of normal prostate progenitor cells, characterized by an intrinsic resistance to androgen deprivation and expression of LY6D. We here demonstrate that conditional deletion of PTEN in the murine prostate epithelium causes an expansion of transformed LY6D+ progenitor cells without impairing stem cell properties.
