The Anterior Insular Cortex --> Central Amygdala Glutamatergic Pathway Is Critical to Relapse after Contingency Management

Despite decades of research on neurobiological mechanisms of psychostimulant addiction, the only effective treatment for many addicts is contingency management, a behavioral treatment that uses alternative non-drug reward to maintain abstinence. However, when contingency management is discontinued, most addicts relapse to drug use.

Murine social stress results in long lasting voiding dysfunction

Repeated exposure to social stress shifts the voiding phenotype in male mice leading to bladder wall remodeling and is associated with increased expression of the stress neuropeptide, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in Barrington's nucleus neurons. In these studies, we set out to determine if the voiding phenotype could recover upon removal from the stressor.

Human mesenchymal stem cells pre-treated with IL-1β and stimulated with BMP-3 enhance chondrogenesis.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Low back pain is one of the most common ailments in western countries afflicting more than 80% of the population and the main cause is considered to be degeneration of intervertebral discs (IVDs). IL-1β is a vital inflammatory cytokine found in abundance in degenerated disc environment whereas BMP-3 is believed to promote chondrogenesis through TGF-β pathway.

AIM:

Prolyl-4-hydroxylase 2 and 3 coregulate murine erythropoietin in brain pericytes.

A classic response to systemic hypoxia is the increased production of red blood cells due to hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-mediated induction of erythropoietin (EPO). EPO is a glycoprotein hormone that is essential for normal erythropoiesis and is predominantly synthesized by peritubular renal interstitial fibroblast-like cells, which express cellular markers characteristic of neuronal cells and pericytes.

Diversity amongst trigeminal neurons revealed by high throughput single cell sequencing

The trigeminal ganglion contains somatosensory neurons that detect a range of thermal, mechanical and chemical cues and innervate unique sensory compartments in the head and neck including the eyes, nose, mouth, meninges and vibrissae.

Interleukin-6 blockade attenuates lung cancer tissue construction integrated by cancer stem cells

In the present study, we successfully generated lung cancer stem cell (CSC)-like cells by introducing a small set of transcription factors into a lung cancer cell line.

CB1 Receptor Activation on VgluT2-Expressing Glutamatergic Neurons Underlies Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC)-Induced Aversive Effects in Mice

Cannabis can be rewarding or aversive. Cannabis reward is believed to be mediated by activation of cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1Rs) on GABAergic neurons that disinhibit dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying cannabis aversion in rodents. In the present study, CB1Rs are found not only on VTA GABAergic neurons, but also on VTA glutamatergic neurons that express vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (VgluT2).

Role of Dopamine D2 Receptor in Stress-Induced Myelin Loss.

Dopaminergic systems play a major role in reward-related behavior and dysregulation of dopamine (DA) systems can cause several mental disorders, including depression.

Oxytocin stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis via oxytocin receptor expressed in CA3 pyramidal neurons.

In addition to the regulation of social and emotional behaviors, the hypothalamic neuropeptide oxytocin has been shown to stimulate neurogenesis in adult dentate gyrus; however, the mechanisms underlying the action of oxytocin are still unclear.

MITF-high and MITF-low cells and a novel subpopulation expressing genes of both cell states contribute to intra and inter-tumoral heterogeneity of primary melanoma.

Abstract

PURPOSE:

Understanding tumour heterogeneity is an important challenge in current cancer research. Transcription and epigenetic profiling of cultured melanoma cells have defined at least two distinct cell phenotypes characterised by distinctive gene expression signatures associated with high or low/absent expression of Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF). Nevertheless, heterogeneity of cellpopulations and gene expression in primary human tumours is much less well characterised.
