STUDY QUESTION:

Is the Transmembrane BAX Inhibitor Motif-6 (TMBIM6) involved in the molecular mechanism by which cisplatin causes reproductive toxicity?

SUMMARY ANSWER:

TMBIM6 protects against cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity through up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1),-which maintains the levels of steroidogenic enzymes by decreaseing oxidative stress in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).

WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY:

A neural basis for antagonistic control of feeding and compulsive behaviors.

Abnormal feeding often co-exists with compulsive behaviors, but the underlying neural basis remains unknown. Excessive self-grooming in rodents is associated with compulsivity. Here, we show that optogenetically manipulating the activity of lateral hypothalamus (LH) projections targeting the paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) differentially promotes either feeding or repetitive self-grooming.

D-Serine is a co-agonist at forebrain N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) and is synthesized by serine racemase (SR). Although D-serine and SR were originally reported to be localized to glia, recent studies have provided compelling evidence that under healthy physiologic conditions both are localized primarily in neurons. However, in pathologic conditions, reactive astrocytes can also express SR and synthesize D-serine.
