A cell-specific regulatory region of the human ABO blood group gene regulates the neighborhood gene encoding odorant binding protein 2B

The human ABO blood group system is of great importance in blood transfusion and organ transplantation. ABO transcription is known to be regulated by a constitutive promoter in a CpG island and regions for regulation of cell-specific expression such as the downstream + 22.6-kb site for epithelial cells and a site in intron 1 for erythroid cells. Here we investigated whether the + 22.6-kb site might play a role in transcriptional regulation of the gene encoding odorant binding protein 2B (OBP2B), which is located on the centromere side 43.4 kb from the + 22.6-kb site.

We previously reported smooth muscle cells (SMCs) represent ≥50% of foam cells in human coronary and ≈70% in apoE (apolipoprotein E)-deficient mouse aortic atheromas and exhibit reduced expression of the cholesterol exporter ABCA1 (ATP-binding cassette transporter A1). A major stimulus for ABCA1 expression is flux of cholesterol out of lysosomes, generated by hydrolysis of lipoprotein cholesteryl esters by LAL (lysosomal acid lipase). In this study, we investigated the potential role lysosomal dysfunction might play in foam cell formation by arterial SMCs.

Immunohistochemical Study of a Correlation between Pemphigus Vulgaris Activity Score and Stem Cell Control

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a potentially life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease. PV autoantibodies disrupt desmosomal adhesion and cause acantholysis. Previous researches have shown that stem cells are indirectly involved as a result of desmoglein deficiency. Leucine-rich repeat-containing G protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) as a follicular stem cell marker was evaluated in aim to correlate its intensity of expression with disease severity. Activation of notch signaling in dorsal root ganglia innervating knee joints in experimental osteoarthritis

Purpose: Surgical destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) is a widely used mouse model of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The cell bodies of primary sensory neurons innervating the knee joints are located in the lumbar dorsal root ganglia (L3-L5 DRG). Analysis of the gene expression profile of L3-L5 DRG after DMM or sham surgery revealed that innate neuro-immune pathways were strongly regulated, especially in the later stages of the model, 8-16 weeks after DMM, when persistent pain is associated with severe joint damage.

Fertility and gamete reserves are maintained by asymmetric divisions of the germline stem cells to produce new stem cells or daughters that differentiate as gametes. Before entering meiosis, differentiating germ cells (GCs) of sexual animals typically undergo cystogenesis. This evolutionarily conserved process involves synchronous and incomplete mitotic divisions of a GC daughter (cystoblast) to generate sister cells connected by intercellular bridges that facilitate the exchange of materials to support rapid expansion of the gamete progenitor population.

Corticosterone inhibits GAS6 to govern hair follicle stem-cell quiescence

Chronic, sustained exposure to stressors can profoundly affect tissue homeostasis, although the mechanisms by which these changes occur are largely unknown. Here we report that the stress hormone corticosterone-which is derived from the adrenal gland and is the rodent equivalent of cortisol in humans-regulates hair follicle stem cell (HFSC) quiescence and hair growth in mice. In the absence of systemic corticosterone, HFSCs enter substantially more rounds of the regeneration cycle throughout life.
