Expression of Cell-Cycle Regulatory Proteins pRb, Cyclin D1, and p53 Is Not Associated with Recurrence Rates of Equine Sarcoids

Sarcoids are among the most common tumors diagnosed in equids; their association with bovine papillomaviruses (BPV) infection has been widely reported, but the mechanism of carcinogenesis has not been fully elucidated. To verify whether BPV infection causes dysregulation of the pRb-Cyclin D1-p16CDKN2A-p53 pathway as reported for human papillomavirus (HPV), the study employed immunohistochemistry to test 55 equine sarcoid biopsies for the expression of pRb, Cyclin D1, and p53 cell cycle regulatory proteins and to evaluate the proliferative rate through Ki67.

A Review on Pathological and Diagnostic Aspects of Emerging Viruses-Senecavirus A, Torque teno sus virus and Linda Virus-In Swine

Swine production represents a significant component in agricultural economies as it occupies over 30% of global meat demand. Infectious diseases could constrain the swine health and productivity of the global swine industry. In particular, emerging swine viral diseases are omnipresent in swine populations, but the limited knowledge of the pathogenesis and the scarce information related to associated lesions restrict the development of data-based control strategies aimed to reduce the potentially great impact on the swine industry.

PRION DISEASES are a group of incurable neurodegenerative diseases caused by the prions, affecting both humans and animals. The atypical folding and aggregation of the soluble cellular prion proteins (PrPC) into scrapie isoform (PrPSc) in the CNS, results in brain damage and other symptoms associated with it.

Light receptors in the avian brain and seasonal reproduction

Detection and transduction of photic cues by nonvisual photoreceptors, located in the deep brain, is a critical component of timing seasonal reproduction in birds. However, the precise identity of the photoreceptors responsible for detection of salient photic cues remains uncertain and debated. Here I review of the existing evidence for each of the three candidate photoreceptive opsins: Vertebrate Ancient Opsin, Melanopsin, and Neuropsin, including localization, action spectrum, and data from experimental manipulation of opsin expression.

Nanoparticle-mediated transgene expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 in the growth restricted guinea pig placenta increases placenta nutrient transporter expression and fetal glucose concentrations

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) significantly contributes to neonatal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Currently, there are no effective treatment options for FGR during pregnancy. We have developed a nanoparticle gene therapy targeting the placenta to increase expression of human insulin-like growth factor 1 (hIGF1) to correct fetal growth trajectories.

Neuropeptide S (NPS) neurons: Parabrachial identity and novel distributions

Neuropeptide S (NPS) increases wakefulness. A small number of neurons in the brainstem express Nps. These neurons are located in or near the parabrachial nucleus (PB), but we know very little about their ontogeny, connectivity, and function. To identify Nps-expressing neurons within the molecular framework of the PB region, we used in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, and Cre-reporter labeling in mice. The primary concentration of Nps-expressing neurons borders the lateral lemniscus at far-rostral levels of the lateral PB.

Organisation of enkephalin inputs and outputs of the central nucleus of the amygdala in mice

The central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) is a key hub integrating sensory inputs and modulating behavioural outputs. The CeA is a complex structure with discrete subdivisions, high peptidergic heterogeneity and broad CNS afferent and efferent projections. While several neuropeptide systems within the CeA have been examined in detail, less is known about CeA preproenkephalin (ppENK) cells. Here, we used a recently developed transgenic Penk-Cre mouse line to advance our understanding of the efferent and afferent connectivity of ppENK in the CeA.

Targeting 5-HT2A receptors and Kv7 channels in PFC to attenuate chronic neuropathic pain in rats using a spared nerve injury model

Chronic pain remains a disabling disease with limited therapeutic options. Pyramidal neurons in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) express excitatory Gq-coupled 5-HT2A receptors (5-HT2AR) and their effector system, the inhibitory Kv7 ion channel. While recent publications show these cells innervate brainstem regions important for regulating pain, the cellular mechanisms underlying the transition to chronic pain are not well understood.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a very prevalent and challenging complication of diabetes worldwide due to high morbidity, high risks of lower extremity amputation and associated mortality. Despite major advances in diabetes treatment in general, there is a paucity of FDA approved technologies and therapies to promote successful healing. Furthermore, accurate biomarkers to identify patients at risk of non-healing and monitor response-to-therapy are significantly lacking.

Cervical Adenosquamous Carcinoma: Detailed Analysis of Morphology, Immunohistochemical Profile, and Outcome in 59 Cases

Although both the 2014 and 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) criteria require unequivocal glandular and squamous differentiation for a diagnosis of cervical adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC), in practice, ASC diagnoses are often made in tumors that lack unequivocal squamous and/or glandular differentiation. Considering the ambiguous etiologic, morphologic, and clinical features and outcomes associated with ASCs, we sought to redefine these tumors.
