Examining ventral subiculum and basolateral amygdala projections to the nucleus accumbens shell: Differential expression of VGLuT1, VGLuT2 and VGaT in the rat

Projections to the striatum are well-identified. For example, in the ventral striatum, two major inputs to the medial nucleus accumbens shell include the ventral subiculum and basolateral amygdala. However, the chemical phenotype(s) of these projection neurons remain unclear. In this study, we examined amygdalostriatal and corticostriatal connectivity in rats using injections of the retrograde tracer cholera toxin b into the nucleus accumbens shell.

Chemogenetic activation of noradrenergic A5 neurons increases blood pressure and visceral sympathetic activity in adult rats

In mammals, the pontine noradrenergic system influences nearly every aspect of central nervous system function. A subpopulation of pontine noradrenergic neurons, called A5, are thought to be important in the cardiovascular response to physical stressors, yet their function is poorly defined. We hypothesized that activation of A5 neurons stimulates a sympathetically-mediated increase in BP.

Stress resilience-associated behaviors following predator scent stress are accompanied by upregulated nucleus accumbens mGlu5 transcription in female Sprague Dawley rats

Despite the higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women, the majority of preclinical research has been conducted utilizing male subjects. We have found that male rats exposed to the predator scent 2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thiazoline (TMT) show heterogenous long-term anxiety-like behavior and conditioned fear to the TMT environment. Stress-Resilient males exhibit increased mGlu5 mRNA expression in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and prefrontal cortex (PFC).

CDX2 Expression in Primary Skin Tumors - Case Series and Review of the Literature

CDX2 expression characterizes tumors of gastrointestinal origin, including those of intestinal-type differentiation. In dermatopathology, CDX2 expression is reported in four settings: cutaneous metastases from carcinomas of intestinal origin or differentiation, extramammary Paget's disease associated with an underlying colorectal or urothelial tumor, pilomatricomas and pilomatrical carcinomas, and rare primary cutaneous (adeno)squamous carcinomas with intestinal immunophenotype.

Female Urethral Carcinoma: A contemporary review of the clinicopathologic features, with emphasis on the histo-anatomic landmarks and potential staging issues

Primary female urethral carcinoma (PUC-F) accounts for less than 1% of all genitourinary malignancies and comprises a histologically diverse group of tumors that are usually associated with poor prognosis. The carcinomas documented at this site include adenocarcinoma (clear cell adenocarcinoma, columnar cell carcinoma and Skene gland adenocarcinoma), urothelial carcinoma (UCa) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Recent studies have shown adenocarcinomas to be the most common type of primary urethral carcinoma in females.

MmuPV1-Induced Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arises Preferentially from Lgr5+ Epithelial Progenitor Cells

Murine papillomavirus, MmuPV1, causes natural infections in laboratory mice that can progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) making it a useful preclinical model to study the role of papillomaviruses in cancer. Papillomavirus can infect cells within hair follicles, which contain multiple epithelial progenitor cell populations, including Lgr5+ progenitors, and transgenic mice expressing human papillomavirus oncogenes develop tumors derived from Lgr5 progenitors.

Agouti‐related peptide neuronal silencing overcomes delayed puberty in neonatally underfed male mice

Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons are thought to indirectly regulate the activity of hypothalamic gonadotrophin-releasing hormone neurons which control fertility. AgRP neurons also drive caloric intake and are modulated by metabolically-relevant hormones, providing a link to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. In mice expressing Cre-dependant designer receptors (DREADDs) in AgRP neurons, we activated or silenced these neurons in vivo using the synthetic ligand clozapine-N-oxide (CNO) to observe the effect of AgRP neuron activity on timing of puberty.

Sexually dimorphic effects of estrogen receptor 2 deletion in the dorsal raphe nucleus on emotional behaviors

Sex differences in emotional behaviors and affective disorders have been widely noted, of which sexually dimorphic secretion of gonadal steroid hormones such as estrogen is suspected to play a role. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. We noted that the expression of estrogen receptor 2 (Esr2, or ERβ), a key mediator of estrogen signaling in the brain, was enriched in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), a region involved in emotion regulation.
