Adult T-Cell Leukemia-Lymphoma Presenting Concurrently with Myelopathy

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is an oncogenic retrovirus. Of the approximate ten to twenty million people currently infected worldwide, 4-9% of infected individuals develop adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) or HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paresis (HAM/TSP) in their lifetime. The current report is based on a patient who presented concurrently with CD30+ lymphoma subtype ATLL and HAM/TSP. The patient’s ATLL responded to brentuximab-vedotin-based chemotherapy; however, HAM/TSP did not improve.

RF10 | PMON205 LH/CG Receptor Activation Protects Mice from Diet-Induced Obesity and Modifies Adipose Tissue Immune Response

Menopause is associated with the loss of LH ovulatory surges and enhanced visceral adiposity. Visceral fat depots increase from 5-8% at premenopause to 15-20% of total body fat at postmenopause. Here, we report that high-dose LH, hCG, or small molecule LH/CGR agonist ORG43553 injected twice-a-week into 14-weeks-old C57BL/6 male mice protects them from diet-induced obesity. Testosterone levels were elevated in mice treated with LH or hCG, but not with ORG43553.

Gene expression data visualization tool on the o²S²PARC platform

Background: The identification of differentially expressed genes and their associated biological processes, molecular function, and cellular components are important for genetic diseases studies because they present potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Methods: In this study, we developed an o²S²PARC template representing an interactive pipeline for the gene expression data visualization and ontologies data analysis and visualization.  To demonstrate the usefulness of the tool, we performed a case study on a publicly available dataset.

Transcriptional Metabolic Reprograming Drives Meiotic Fate Decision in Mammalian Germ Cells

Nutrient starvation drives yeast meiosis by inactivating mTORC1 and protein kinase A (PKA), while retinoic acid (RA) is required for mammalian meiosis through the activation of its germline target, _stimulated by retinoic acid gene 8 (Stra8)_.

Fibroblast Growth Factor Regulates Olfactory Bulb Formation by Controlling Radial Glial Cell Development

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling plays several important roles in the development of the central nervous system. During the mid-gestation stage, FGF receptors (FGFRs) are expressed in the ventricular zone of the telencephalon and regulate the proliferation and neuronal differentiation of radial glial cells (RGCs). Inhibition of FGFR signaling at this stage results in abnormal brain formation, particularly loss of FGFR1 signaling causes hypoplasia of the olfactory bulb (OB). However, how FGFR1 signaling regulates OB formation is not fully understood.

Increased CD73 expression is associated with poorly differentiated Gleason score and tumor size in prostate cancer

There are few prostate cancer prognostic biomarkers. However, clinical difficulties in distinguishing between aggressive and non-aggressive tumors have been observed. CD73 is a 70-kDa glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked ecto-enzyme that reduces antitumor immunity in mouse models of tumor, particularly prostate cancer. It's believed to be a promising biomarker for predicting the clinical development and prognosis of certain tumor types. Its function in prostate cancer, however, is unknown.

Distribution of acid-sensing ion channel subunits in human sensory neurons contrasts with that in rodents

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) play a critical role in nociception in human sensory neurons. Four genes (ASIC1, ASIC2, ASIC3, and ASIC4) encoding multiple subunits through alternative splicing have been identified in humans. Real time-PCR experiments showed strong expression of three subunits ASIC1, ASIC2, and ASIC3 in human dorsal root ganglia; however, their detailed expression pattern in different neuronal populations has not been investigated yet.

A C57BL/6 Mouse model of SARS-CoV-2 infection recapitulates age- and sex-based differences in human COVID-19 disease and recovery

We present a comprehensive analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection and recovery in wild type C57BL/6 mice, demonstrating that this is an ideal model of infection and recovery that accurately phenocopies acute human disease arising from the ancestral SARS-CoV-2. Disease severity and infection kinetics are age- and sex-dependent, as has been reported for humans, with older mice and males in particular exhibiting decreased viral clearance and increased mortality.

PlexinA1-deficient mice exhibit decreased cell density and augmented oxidative stress in parvalbumin-expressing interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex

PlexinA1 (PlxnA1) is a transmembrane receptor for semaphorins (Semas), a large family of axonal guidance cues vital during neural development. PlxnA1 is expressed in embryonic interneurons, and PlxnA1 deletion in mice leads to less interneurons in the developing cortex. In addition, PlxnA1 has been identified as a schizophrenia susceptibility gene. In our previous study, PlxnA1 knockout (KO) mice under a BALB/cAJ genetic background exhibited significantly increased self-grooming and reduced prepulse inhibition, a reliable phenotype for investigating the neurobiology of schizophrenia.
