Prognostic Significance of p16 and Its Relationship with Human Papillomavirus Status in Patients with Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Results of 5 Years Follow-Up

Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma (PSCC) is associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV). The immunohistochemical (IHC) test for p16INK4a (p16) is highly correlated with HR-HPV expression in other SCCs. To investigate whether the expression of p16 IHC or HR-HPV is associated with survival in PSCC, we conducted a single institution analysis of 143 patients with a diagnosis of PSCC and, available tissue were tested for p16 IHC staining patterns, histological subtype, tumor grade, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) by an experienced pathologist.

Recent advances in cutaneous HPV infection

More than 200 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) have been reported to date and have been associated with various dermatological diseases. Among dermatological diseases, viral verrucae are the most commonly reported to be associated with HPV. Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) consists of three types: typical EV is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder with TMC6/TMC8 gene mutations, atypical EV develops due to various gene mutations that cause immunodeficiency, and acquired EV develops due to acquired immunodeficiency.

Retinoblastoma Protein Is Required for Epstein-Barr Virus Replication in Differentiated Epithelia

Coinfection of human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been detected in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Although HPV and EBV replicate in differentiated epithelial cells, we previously reported that HPV epithelial immortalization reduces EBV replication within organotypic raft culture and that the HPV16 oncoprotein E7 was sufficient to inhibit EBV replication. A well-established function of HPV E7 is the degradation of the retinoblastoma (Rb) family of pocket proteins (pRb, p107, and p130).

Human papillomavirus status and prognosis of oropharyngeal high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma

The prognostic impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection or smoking on oropharyngeal high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (HG-NEC) is not established.Retrospective study with patients with oropharyngeal HG-NEC seen at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1997 to 2020, and previously reported patients with oropharyngeal HG-NEC and known p16 and HPV status from the literature review.

The current model of human papillomavirus (HPV) replication is comprised of three modes of replication. Following infectious delivery, the viral genome is amplified during the establishment phase to reach up to some hundred copies per cell. The HPV genome copy number remains constant during the maintenance stage. The differentiation of infected cells induces HPV genome amplification.

Esophageal cancer is a relatively common malignancy worldwide with a high mortality (5-year survival of <15%). Despite screening, surveillance, improved imaging and treatment, the exponential rise in OAC continues. The strongest risk factors for OAC are chronic heartburn and metaplastic transformation of the lower third of the esophagus (Barrett's esophagus). The risk profile includes Caucasian race, male gender older age, obesity and smoking. Although the tumor risk in BO has been progressively revised downwards, the exponential rise in OAC remains unchecked.
