Detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) in clinical samples: Evolving methods and strategies for the accurate determination of HPV status of head and neck carcinomas

Much recent attention has highlighted a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) related to human papillomavirus (HPV) that has an epidemiologic, demographic, molecular and clinical profile which is distinct from non-HPV-related HNSCC. The clinical significance of detecting HPV in a HNSCC has resulted in a growing expectation for HPV testing of HNSCCs. Although the growing demand for routine testing is understandable and appropriate, it has impelled an undisciplined approach that has been largely unsystematic.

Characterization of Inflammatory (Lymphoepithelioma-like) Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Study of 8 Cases.

Context.-The World Health Organization has recently recognized lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, or inflammatory hepatocellular carcinoma, as a variant of hepatocellular carcinoma. Objective.-To identify and characterize the inflammatory hepatocellular carcinomas in our institution from 1988 to the present. Design.-All cases of hepatocellular carcinoma in our institution from 1988 to the present were reviewed and reclassified as lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma and were studied in comparison to appropriately matched controls.

Do high-risk human papillomaviruses cause oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma?

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPV) are an established etiologic factor for a growing number of oropharyngeal cancers. However, their potential role in other upper aerodigestive tract locations is still a matter of debate, particularly in the oral cavity. This is of paramount importance as in the future diagnosis, treatment and follow up in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma may vary according to HPV status.

Human papillomavirus testing in diagnostic head and neck histopathology

Assessment of human papillomavirus (HPV) status is a requirement for the diagnosis of HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in cervical lymph nodes where the location of the primary neoplasm is unknown. Within the diagnostic histopathology laboratory, there should be a validated and reproducible HPV testing strategy that can provide HPV status within a reasonable timeframe to inform patient care.

Human Papillomavirus-Related Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Variants

During the last few decades a phenotypically distinct type of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), that is etiologically related to human papillomavirus(HPV), has emerged and its prevalence continues to increase. The tumors are site-specific with special predilection for the oropharynx. They are morphologically and molecularly distinct and are responsive to different types of treatment modalities, with excellent clinical outcome, in spite of early lymph node metastasis. Microscopically, the carcinomas are nonkeratinizing SCCs.

Transcriptional Activity of HPV in Inverted Papilloma Demonstrated by In Situ Hybridization for E6/E7 mRNA.

OBJECTIVE: Assess human papilloma virus (HPV) transcriptional activity in inverted Schneiderian papillomas (IPs). STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. SETTING: Academic tertiary care center. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Retrospective clinicopathologic review of 19 cases of IP in patients undergoing surgical excision from 1995 to 2013 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Surgical pathology archival material was histopathologically reviewed using hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides.
