Expression of Indian hedgehog signaling in murine oviductal infundibulum and its relationship with epithelial homeostasis

Homeostasis of the oviductal infundibulum epithelium is continuously regulated by signaling pathways under physiological and pathological conditions. Herein, we investigated the expression of hedgehog (Hh) signaling-related components in the murine oviductal infundibulum, which is known to maintain homeostasis in the adult epithelium.

Resveratrol Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Autophagy by Blocking SREBP1 Expression in Oral Cancer Cells

Resveratrol is a polyphenolic antioxidant found in grapes, red wine, and peanuts and has been reported to have anti-neoplastic effects on various cancer types. However, the exact mechanism of its anti-cancer effects in oral cancer is not fully understood and remains controversial. Resveratrol exhibits strong hypolipidemic effects; therefore, we examined its effect on lipid metabolism in oral cancer. Resveratrol significantly reduced cell viability and induced autophagic cell death in oral cancer cells but not in normal cells.

DANCR Induces Cisplatin Resistance of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer by KLF5/p27 Signaling

An increasing body of evidence suggests that long noncoding RNAs play critical roles in human cancer. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease and the potential involvement of long noncoding RNAs in breast cancer remains poorly understood. Herein, researchers identified a long noncoding RNA, DANCR, which promotes cisplatin chemoresistance in triple-negative breast cancer cells. Mechanistically, DANCR could bind to Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) and induce acetylation of KLF5 at lysine 369 (K369), and DANCR knockdown resulted in down-regulation of KLF5 protein levels.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is known to cause multi-organ dysfunction1-3 during acute infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), with some patients experiencing prolonged symptoms, termed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (refs. 4,5). However, the burden of infection outside the respiratory tract and time to viral clearance are not well characterized, particularly in the brain3,6-14.

Temporal changes of genes associated with intestinal homeostasis in broiler chickens following a single infection with Eimeria acervulina

Infection with the protozoan parasite Eimeria can cause the economically devastating disease coccidiosis, which is characterized by gross tissue damage and inflammation resulting in blunted villi and altered intestinal homeostasis. Male broiler chickens at 21 d of age were given a single challenge with Eimeria acervulina. Temporal changes in intestinal morphology and gene expression were investigated at 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 d post-infection (dpi). There were increased crypt depths for chickens infected with E. acervulina starting at 3 dpi and continuing to 14 dpi.

Distinct but interchangeable subpopulations of colorectal cancer cells with different growth fates and drug sensitivity

Dynamic changes in cell properties lead to intratumor heterogeneity; however, the mechanisms of nongenetic cellular plasticity remain elusive. When the fate of each cell from colorectal cancer organoids was tracked through a clonogenic growth assay, the cells showed a wide range of growth ability even within the clonal organoids, consisting of distinct subpopulations; the cells generating large spheroids and the cells generating small spheroids.

Increased Expression of the Δ133p53β Isoform Enhances Brain Metastasis

The Δ133p53β isoform is increased in many primary tumors and has many tumor-promoting properties that contribute to increased proliferation, migration and inflammation. Here we investigated whether Δ133p53β contributed to some of the most aggressive tumors that had metastasized to the brain. Δ133p53β mRNA expression was measured in lung, breast, melanoma, colorectal metastases and, where available, the matched primary tumor. The presence of Δ133p53β expression was associated with the time for the primary tumor to metastasize and overall survival once the tumor was detected in the brain.
